Katie Thompson, MAT

Project Manager & Implementation Coach

A native North Carolinian, Katie received her B.M. in Music Education from Appalachian State University and a Master’s degree in Teaching in English as a New Language & Linguistics from North Carolina State University, as well as K-12 teaching licensures in both North Carolina and New York. She joins Helping Education after many years of teaching English as a Second language at schools in NYC, specifically Brooklyn and the Bronx. As an education and immigration advocate, Katie’s work centers on equitable policy for immigrant students and teachers and she is thrilled to bring that experience back to NC.

As a teacher, Katie has led general education classrooms, taught ENL classes, managed ENL programs, coached colleagues and students with best language acquisition strategies in mind, and served as an education curriculum consultant for international education organizations. She has led workshops for teachers and parents on rights and policy for language learners, culturally sensitive instruction, new language acquisition strategies, and immigration and education. As a lifelong learner, Katie has also completed courses in Education in Emergencies at the Université de Genève and Immigration Law at the University of Pennsylvania.

Even as a self proclaimed city girl, Katie loves to hike in US National Parks, attend concerts of all sorts, and cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
